Learn my 3 top tips to declutter your life.
Well, I think you will all agree that winter/spring so far has been a pretty miserable affair! I don’t know about you but I am sick of the rain.
As usual, the weather has been a typical topic of conversation across the nation this season and in our house, it has been no different. I have been reliably informed by my daughter in the past that “It is part of our culture, Mum”. So, in true British style, I have already started to think about and long for the spring, those slightly warmer days, trees in bud and a bit of colour again in the garden.
And this got me thinking, why do we only think about spring cleaning in the Spring? Decluttering can be done at any time of the year and it should be. There are so many benefits.
What is it they say “Clean space, clear mind”. I, for one, believe this to be true and whilst clutter and chaos can be good for some people, many find it debilitating and stressful. So why is it we do nothing about it?
Perhaps it is the sure volume of the task? Is it boring? As a business owner, it certainly doesn’t earn us any money so why would we want to waste valuable time clearing stuff away when we could be doing something more productive. Time is money after all.
Well, I say that decluttering is productive and it will in the long run help. And it doesn’t just have to be a work-related space that creates a problem. It may be that spare room that has looked like a tip for years, it could be that there are too many tasks and ideas flying around your head or it could be the desk that looks like a tornado has hit it. Whatever, it is deal with it and it will make a difference.
- If you have a lot on, the chances are you have alot flying around in your head space. And once that metaphorical filing cabinet is full, it can be very difficult to find anything in it. So, write it down, make a list, do a brain dump but get it out and onto paper. You can then organise all those thoughts much more effectively.
- Take a good look at your desk. How much do you really need on it? There is nothing worse than piles of paper everywhere resulting in the inability to find anything and that inevitable frustration. Spend some time organising your work area, buy some trays, file things away, it doesn’t take that long once you get started. It is just as productive for your business as those phone calls to prospective clients and will make a difference to your focus.
- It is not always our work life that can be in disarray and needs a good sort out. If you work for yourself, you will very often leave your home jobs until last. Thus, ensuring that you never get them done and this can be just as stressful. Set aside an afternoon to sort out all that admin and those unpaid bills, have a tidy up, declutter those spaces that have been bothering you for months. It will be worth it in the end.
So, don’t wait, do this now and be ready for the new season when you get to put your efforts into something more fun.
